Much attention has been given to eBooks, but little has been said about their environmental benefits. Research shows that eBooks are on par with reusable bottles and bags in terms of their ability to give consumers affordable, green buying alternatives. Paper manufacturing practices are among the third largest polluters of air, land and water. Many of the books read today were printed overseas, shipped to the U.S. and other countries by boat, trucked to distribution centres and then trucked to local bookstores. One hour of energy spent on a laptop computer equals the amount of energy expended to create just four sheets of paper.
