April 22 is Earth Day 2010
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Earth Day in Canada and the 40th worldwide. It is one of the most promoted environmental celebrations in the world. This international event first began in 1970, inspiring the US Congress to pass clean air and water acts. It also encouraged the Environmental Protection Agency to research and monitor environmental issues and enforce environmental laws.

In Canada alone, Earth Day has grown into Earth Week and Earth Month to accommodate countless events and projects. They range from large public events, including Edmonton’s Earth Day Festival at Hawrelak Park (just by itself this event attracts approximately 30,000 participants a year). Earth Day provides Canadians an opportunity to participate in a variety of personal and professional environmental projects. The organization also offers kids and adults alike the practical knowledge and tools (starting as early as elementary school) they need to lessen their impact on the environment.

In 1990, two million Canadians joined 200 million people in 141 countries to celebrate the first International Earth Day. Today, more than six million Canadians and virtually every school aged child in Canada join a billion people in over 170 countries in staging Earth Day events and projects to address local environmental issues.

In 2008, our homegrown branch was chosen as Canada’s “Outstanding Non-profit Organization” for its innovative year-round programs and educational resources, by the Canadian Network for Environmental Education and Communication.

In honour of its 20th anniversary, there will be an Earth Day Gala happening at the Drake Hotel in Toronto on June 9, 2010. Click here for ticket and sponsorship information.
