Health issue: myasthinia gravis (muscle weakness and exhaustion)
Age: 66
Location: Victoria, BC
Occupation: Retired
Symptom: I first became aware that something was wrong in 1996. I was at a dance and had sipped half of a glass of wine. When I opened my mouth to speak
I was badly slurring my words. The disease was not correctly diagnosed until May 1997. Symptoms progressed to include a drooping eye, pneumonia and a tumour. I had surgery in June to remove the tumour as well as my thymus gland. In 1998, they found that the tumour, which was between the heart and lung, had been invasive and had not been completely removed. I underwent 28 sessions of radiation. One of my worst symptoms was chronic fatigue. I had very little energy and was even unable to play Bridge — something I had always enjoyed.
Health Recommendations: I have tried many treatments. I have seen a Naturopath and have also used acupuncture — most natural treatments provided temporary relief. I use natural health supplements along with the heavy pharmaceuticals
I have to take. By far, the best results have come from biofeedback, which I started two years ago.
Results: Regular biofeedback sessions have given me a better quality of life. I have managed to get off some medication and the debilitating chronic fatigue has diminished. Best of all, I am playing Bridge again!
