Wicked weekend at the cottage got you feeling down in the dumps? Rid yourself of any nasty hangover with these natural fixes.

  1. Ginger

Research has shown ginger to help soothe upset stomach. Drink ginger tea or add the fresh herb to any recipe to help calm your churning belly.

  1. Eggs

Eggs help to break down alcohol in the body, with glutathione, cysteine, and alcohol dehydrogenase.

  1. Asparagus

Just like eggs, asparagus contains glutathione and alcohol dehydrogenase, which help to break down alcohol.

  1. Coconut water

Rich in electrolytes, coconut water helps to prevent aches, pains, and nausea associated with hangover.

  1. B-vitamins

Alcohol depletes the body’s levels of b-vitamins, which can lead to anxiety, depression, and brain damage. Pop a b-complex or eat some leafy greens to combat this deficiency.

  1. Potassium

Drinking lowers your potassium levels, which can make you feel weak and shaky. Eat a banana, an avocado, yogurt, or beans to up your levels, or take a potassium supplement.

However, some natural remedies aren’t worth the hype. Stay away from the following hangover-curing myths:

  1. Fish Oil

Fish oil has been shown to lower high prostaglandin levels caused by alcohol consumption, which may cause hangover headaches. However, it’s not a quick fix: fish oil takes weeks to work.

  1. Activated Charcoal

While purported to help detoxify the body by removing alcohol from your system, studies have found that activated charcoal binds poorly to alcohol. As such, blood alcohol levels don’t actually change after it is taken.
