Cover Girl Update:

Serena Williams was on our “More Out Of Life” 2012 cover. Now, the tennis star has just capped her dominant run to a third consecutive U.S. Open championship. Williams won in straight sets against Switzerland’s Caroline Wozniacki.

She now holds 18 Grand Slam singles titles. That ties the Open era record held by Chris Evert. Williams has dominated the tennis scene for almost two decades winning her first and last women’s singles titles 15 years apart. Williams, at 33, is the number one women’s tennis player in the world.

In our 2012 cover story, Williams talked to Viva about playing tennis from a young age and how her relationship with the game has changed over the years. “Developing a greater love for the game – a bigger and more special relationship – has happened,” says Williams. “I have a different sort of appreciation now. It’s changed for the better.”

Williams has overcome health challenges throughout the years, only to make her a stronger and more powerful woman both on and off the court. Just 48 hours after her Open title win, Williams was front and center once again, this time for her own fashion show during New York Fashion Week. “I finished the tennis part, so I’m ready for the fashion part,” she told reporters about her clothing line Serena Williams Signature Statement. Sitting in the front row? U.S. Open runner-up and close friend Caroline Wozniacki.
